The Instagram Explore page is a junk drawer that somehow knows exactly what you like. Cooking hacks. Somebody’s dog. A guy building a cabin with nothing but an axe and a suspicious amount of confidence.

And the trap is where it lives. You tap the magnifying glass to search for one specific account, and before you’ve typed a single letter, the Explore grid is already there, wall to wall, waving at you. (I have opened Instagram to look up a restaurant’s hours and come out knowing how to tie a bowline knot. I still don’t know the restaurant’s hours.)

Can you turn off the Instagram Explore page?

Not with Instagram’s own settings. There’s no switch in the app that turns Explore off.

What you can do is use Instagram somewhere Explore doesn’t show up. Scroll Less has a built-in browser for Instagram, and in Scroll Less’s built-in browser you can hide Explore completely. Same account, same friends, no endless grid.

Why Explore is harder to resist than it looks

Your main feed at least has a vague connection to people you chose to follow. Explore doesn’t pretend. It’s a grid of things picked purely to keep you tapping, and every tap teaches it to pick better next time.

That’s why “I’ll just be careful” doesn’t really work. You’re not up against a habit. You’re up against a recommendation engine that’s very good at its job, sitting one tap away from the search bar you actually needed.

The easier move is to not see it at all.

How to hide Explore on iPhone with Scroll Less

Here’s the setup:

  1. Download Scroll Less from the App Store.
  2. Open it and follow the quick setup.
  3. Open Instagram inside Scroll Less and log in.
  4. Switch Explore to hidden.

That’s it. Now when you browse Instagram in Scroll Less’s built-in browser, the Explore grid simply isn’t there. You can check on friends and go look at the account you meant to look at, without the cabin guy ambushing you.

Changed your mind? Flip it back on. Nothing about your Instagram account changes. Explore is just out of sight.

Hide the rest of the rabbit holes while you’re there

Explore usually isn’t the only problem. Once you’re in Scroll Less’s built-in browser, you can also hide:

  • The main feed, if you’d rather check specific people than scroll a stream.
  • Suggested posts from accounts you don’t follow.
  • Stories (this one’s hidden by default; turn it back on if Stories are how you keep up with friends).

Pick whatever gets you. Leave whatever doesn’t.

Pair it with Reels blocking in the Instagram app

Here’s how a lot of people end up using Scroll Less: both halves at once.

In the regular Instagram app, Scroll Less blocks full-screen Reels. Your DMs, Stories, Search and profile keep working normally, so you can still answer your group chat in the app you’re used to.

Then, when you want to actually browse Instagram, you do it in Scroll Less’s built-in browser, with Explore (and anything else you picked) hidden.

The DMs stay easy. The rabbit holes stay closed. If Reels are the bigger problem for you, start with how to block Instagram Reels but keep your DMs.

A few quick answers

Will hiding Explore unfollow anyone or change my account?

No. It only changes what you see in Scroll Less’s built-in browser. Your followers, posts and messages are untouched.

Do I need a different Instagram account?

Nope. You log in with the account you already have.

Does Scroll Less do YouTube too?

Yes. It blocks Shorts inside the YouTube app, and its built-in browser can hide YouTube’s Home feed and Related videos. If you’re comparing options across apps, I rounded them up in the best apps to block Reels and Shorts on iPhone.

Search for what you came for. Skip the grid.

Explore is designed to make you forget why you opened Instagram. Hiding it means you remember.

Get Scroll Less on the App Store.

Then go look up those restaurant hours. For real this time.
